Vanya’s most recent work is highly textured and semi-abstract – using digital prints and photographs on textured rice paper. This work has come about from a pre-occupation with the environment, particularly the mangroves of Samoa and their fragile ecosystems.

Le Togo Samoa Series

“This body of work Togo Samoa is based on the mangroves in Samoa. These unique mangrove forests and associated wildlife communities are threatened and endangered habitats. The effects of climate change, sea level rise, erosion, salinity changes and sand mining continue to destroy the mangroves. The increased demands for land with urban drift require our immediate attention and action.

“These impacts have serious and irreparable on our small island coastal communities and also on the marine breeding grounds and species that live in these areas. The rapid destruction and degradation of the mangrove forests and estuaries should be of major concern to the Samoan people.”

Togo Sa, 2009
Togo Sa (sacred mangroves) is part of an ongoing series on Togo Samoa or mangroves of Samoa,
exploring the mangrove ecosystems in Samoa. The series of installations documents Vanya’s response
to the mangroves and these unique and amazing locations in the hope that through art she can raise
public awareness that focuses on the role mangroves play in the coastal ecosystem and in
protecting Samoa’s coastline and villages.

Togo Faaola, 2009
Togo
Faaola (mangroves support and create life), is based on the Saitaua and Saanapu Mangroves.
Here Vanya was inspired by images of amazing trees and root systems – male mangroves and female mangroves,
and the layers of soil and leaf matter, with the odd bird quietly going about their business and schools of fish
jumping through the water. This series is based on the life force and creative force of the mangroves.

Togo Fa'a Failele (mangroves nourish), is based on the Saitaua and Sa’anapu mangrove ecosystem.

breed and grow in these habitats.
